A NEW POLITICAL & ECONOMIC IMAGINARY
PROPOSALS FROM WOMENS CONVERGERNCE
WSF NAIROBI 2007
( this document is summarizing 37 proposals related to women( item 5 above), but name of organisations , and emails are lost )
We, the women of the world, from our central mountain, the point where stillness and movements are together, invite you to listen to the wind; The wind from the South: the south as third world, as the civilisation of Africa, Asia the Arab world, Latin America the Caribbean and Pacific: the South as the voices and movements of peoples, wherever these movements exist; The South as the visions and wisdoms of women:
1. We reaffirm the South as the source of new paradigms. The South is a source of critical approach to the world. The South is an act of disobedience against the confirmation of world maps that produce spatial difference by providing conflicts and marking impacts of imperial culture through inventing Others and exoticising their images and places.
2. The South should remain a space for inventing new political patterns, creating alternative political imaginations which challenge the existing theoretical concepts and categories of the dominant discourse.
3. We declare that the global South offers a possibility for rearticulation, for rethinking, the chance for a new entry into the comprehensive critical imaginary, a region of imaginative possibility.
Slogan: African Women the Mirror and Knowledge of the World
4. We will move away from traditions of the dominant discourse and find ourselves in that terrain which has been denigrated by the discourse: Centre ourselves where the socially excluded and wretched of the earth reside: where women live. This will require engaging with and in the terrain of those living on the margins.
5. We recognise that knowledge that was produced during the past three centuries created more problems than it has solved. Similarly, in spite of the tremendous growth in education, we witness the disappearance of thousands of languages and worlds. In the WTO trade discourse as well as at WIPO women’s knowledge is being rooted out. We will in 2007 – 2008 deepen our analysis of meanings of knowledge.
6. We will be the dissenting voice in all spaces including the World Social Forum to uproot knowledge with false connotations that is dropped from above by institutions, experts and ‘professionals’. We will in all our spaces and activities highlight the damage to society when we ignore knowledge that is inseparable from the knower. We will make determined efforts in all our social interactions to liberate ourselves from universal thinking and regain a pluralistic attitude; and become again searchers for truth and for what was made invisible or worthless in our cultures.
7. We will through writing, research, forums and popular dialogues build foundations of alternatives to globalisation and neoliberal ideologies that militate against the universal dimension of dignity. A global forum on indigenous women and dignity will be launched at the end of 2007 in Africa, to explore source of dignity like autonomy, opportunity and rationality.
8. Various forums for women in 2007 - 2008 will explore the new possibilities that indigenous knowledge and people play in creating a new politics of the subalterns and carving out a new political project of dignity, which at the same time creates alternative to the exclusive, sectarian, patriarchal and corrupt politics of the subalterns.
Slogan: Women Decentre, Interrupt and Disrupt Exclusion
9. Our struggles will reflect the local and indigenous knowledge and use it in our confrontation with hegemonic power and draw the contours with another imaginary. This will culminate in days of action in the lead up to the 4th Rural Women’s Congress in 2007.
Slogan: Women of the World Freeing Knowledge, Thought and Wisdoms
10. We will launch a global confrontation against the dominant discourses of development, of poverty and privilege and the colonisation of our economic structures emerging through the Free Trade Agreements and the Economic Partnership Agreements of the EU and US. Plan June 25 2007 as the Day of the Gift Economy.
11. The global confrontation will have days of action to 2008 that will offer options of alternative institutions and organisations of governance and power that promote women’s and men’s collective agency and self-determination
12. The gender and trade networks will launch a South-South forum to confront the FTA’s. A meeting is anticipated in Colombia in 2007.
13. A no to EPA’s (Economic Partnership Agreements) joint campaign with women in the EU and ACP countries will be launched in July 2007.
Slogan: Free the Economy from Neo-liberal Trade
Globalise the Gift Economy; No to Patriarchal Capitalism
Gift giving creates Abundance; Neo-liberal Markets Create Scarcity
14. We will intensify women’s anti-war campaigns against producers of arms, militarism, war and the killing machines of terror raining on the lives of women, men and children in Somalia, Dafur, Afghanistan, Iraq and Palestine. We will launch the speech of human consciousness around our anti-war efforts as an oppositional act against war everywhere in the summer of 2007.
Slogan: The Personal is Political; The Political is Always International
15. We will campaign to stop corporate control over our bodies, sexuality, labour and lives; we will articulate a new ethics of discomfort and create a counter-power. Reintroduce women’s bodies as a field endowed with citizenship in our campaigns on violence against women. November 25 will be used as a pivotal day to bring struggles of the many forms of violence against women into prominence.
16. We will enter dialogue with new technologies confronting women’s lives.
17. A Global confrontation against TNC’s in the WTO, IFI’s and United Nations Agencies. We will use the UN spaces and the G8 Summit in Germany 2007 to expose the role of TNC’s in creating underdevelopment.
Slogan: Reconceptualise Women’s Bodies as a Political Space
18. Women of the world will continue to liberate the state from the stranglehold of globalisation to defend our social sovereignty and our food sovereignty. We will dialogue with the TNC’s through protest, boycott of products and expose their practices. We will join peasant, artisinal fisher people and peasant farmers in liberating food sovereignty from the TNC’s and the farm subsidies of the North.
Slogan: Recover and Re-politicise Democracy and Citizens Rights.
No Democracy Without Women!
19. Women of the world will campaign to broaden and transform the space within the World Social forum from a space of privilege. Feminists will politicise feminist vision and presence in the WSF itself. Feminists will contribute to inter-movement dialogues that offer new frames of meaning, negotiating, disputing and alliance building with social and women’s movements.
Slogan: Another World is not Possible without another Economy; Another World is not Possible without Another Democracy.
20. Women will introduce Energy Sovereignty as a people’s democratic global initiative towards the end of 2007. We are proposing a social and political platform to ensure a coherent, inclusive global response to the energy crisis. This platform will recognise that energy sovereignty support and does not undermine food sovereignty.
21. We will continue to support women and men living in oil regions call to get TNC oil companies out of their countries. We will make a demand for petroleum and uranium to be left in the ground. We will take direct action, coordinated and simultaneous action to shut down oil TNC’s.
Slogan: Free Mother Earth from the Market
22. We will argue for a post hydrocarbon world that is one of subsistence and greater regional autonomy and self-sufficiency.
23. The Feminist Dialogues will organise an international conference on fundamentalism of all religions to free the world from fundamentalism. March 8 2007 has bee declared as a global day of action “Women for a World Free from Fundamentalism. A website will be created for women’s experiences of anti-fundamentalist struggles.
24. African women will plan a Dignity Forum in Africa, a space that will bring together indigenous people of the world, the Dalits, Khoi and others.
25. The concept of dignity will be expanded integrated into the Anti-trafficking activities.
26. A visibility campaign will be launched to expose trafficking of humans as a crime against humanity. Women will engage police agencies in the struggle again human trafficking.
27. The trade networks in the African women’s movement will hold two festivals one in Uganda June 2007 the other in March 2008 that explores alternatives to trade that enable rural women to trade their goods, finance their production and exchange seeds to support peasant farmers and rural livelihoods. Food Sovereignty the right to land and natural resources will be a central platform in the festival.
28. The Courts of Women will redefine poverty as a deliberate form of slavery new apartheid that deepens structural violence and poverty. African women will use this analysis to confront created scarcity and challenge the dominant concepts and categories that are unable to grasp the fact that poverty is genocide.
Slogan: Another Political Imaginary is Possible
29. Women of the world will support the self determination and political participation of women emerging out of conflict such as the DRC, Iraq in the democratisation processes of their countries. We will support political literacy to enable women to take positions of decision-making to assist them transform institutions from within.
30. The Right to Work and Decent Work Campaign will be launched through a common day of action in support of women working in the formal and informal sectors. An international conference on women’s income, right to work, and reproductive work will be held.
31. The World March for Women will be intensified by fermenting a feminist revolution from grassroots levels, reconstruct women’s relationship with the environment. Women’s mobilisation will be launched against G8 June 2007.
Slogan: Mobilise, Organise and Unite Women’s Struggles
32. The women’s movement will challenge constructs and concepts around media, technologies that perpetuate neoliberalism and advance fundamentalism and militarism. A campaign will be launched to ensure that information and communication are public goods that should promote citizenship, participation, democracy not profit. It will affirm and centre indigenous and women’s knowledge as a value and wisdom that contributes to humanity. Work with women’s media networks on a multimedia strategy.
33. The women’s movement will ensure that future WSF’s and other women’s spaces provide an intergenerational way of movement building that embraces and harnesses the participation of young women. Young women will claim space for leadership. Mentorship’s will be advanced to connect younger women’s struggles wit other struggles around the world. Young women will organise a forum to protect them from violence.
34. A writing, thinking and action series around the ethics of discomfort will be launched to raise urgent and new questions about reality and the actions taken, and about the practices of actors. In essence, this will force us to invent new approaches modelled on impertinent knowledge, which questions the legitimacy of the traditional discourse. Uncertainty will become a powerful engine for change and action.
35. Our use of the ethics of discomfort will allow us to disassociate ourselves from gender visions that de-politicise the transgressive content of existing social relations and make them sheer objects of technical analysis; in rejecting poverty as the main object of analysis and the shift of focus on to the inequity in the distribution of wealth, as the only option of moving towards social justice rather than charity.
36. In the Multilateral such as the UN, WTO, IMF and BANK institutions, regional and national policies, we will deconstruct and depoliticise the economy and shift to reconstruct and politicise politics, displacing the hegemony of the market over citizens while articulating social change. We will recover transgressive proposals at the level of the private sphere; imbue them with new political meaning to reveal the interrelationship between production and social reproduction. The national budget will be used as an entry point to challenge hegemonic market power in 2007 in various countries in Africa.
37. The Women’s movements will work to transform the WSF space to ensure that women of the South from Africa, Asia, Latin America, play central roles in the IC, content and all working committees and space. It will demand the end of the ghettoisation of women who can not attend many forums because of lack of translation, high price of attendance and inadequate representation of women in the majority of the convergence space.
38. Women of the world need the WSF as a space to learn to listen and to speak with plurality that we call the women’s movement. We the women of the world will reformulate the question of power. We will repeat the formula to change the world we need to seize power, as we regain power we are organising it in the best way for the world.
39. For Women of the World, Hope is the very essence of popular movements. Nonconformity and discontent are not enough. Neither is critical awareness enough. People mobilise themselves when they think that their action may bring about a change, whey they have hope!
Another World is not Possible without another Economy; Another World is not Possible without Another Democracy. Another World is not Possible without Women!
