Public Screening Promotion Group
Group to promote the public screening of the events of the global action week/ day 2008 on big screens in cities around the world.
• This could be done in a similar fashion as the public screening of the soccer world championship in Germany a year ago, where big screens had been put on the cities hot spots (as e.g. a sqaure with big metro stations) and a huge crowd was watching and celebrating.
• The purpose: It would give attention to the initiatives all around the world – may they be small or big – and lend them the attention that usually the mainstream media deny them.
• Also activists and bystanders would gain the impression that – even though in the everyday life of activism one often feels quite isolated and lonely – this is not the case and there are millions around the globe struggeling every day to achieve a better world.
• With the prospect of having your struggle observed all around the world, maybe more initiatives can even be convinced to participate in the global action day/ week. Also we create a piece of powerful counter public – in the public space of cities – this way reclaiming the public and also the city.

The way to do it:
This public screening could work
with not too much effort on part of the local groups and with the
support of media activists, who download and edit the material from the
website.
- Indymedia centers – usually located in big cities – could help with expertise (filming and editing material).
- Local
groups, initiatives and movements could work in alliance with NGOs and
local sponsors to put up a screen in a public place (or hall where the
weather does not allow it) and a video beamer.
At least in Germany, this could
be announced as a video demonstration – this way falling under the law
of political manifestations.
Otherwise there is also the possibility to get artistis and filmmakers with a reputation to join in and declare it an art festival/ cultural event – that has noting to do with politics.
Ressources needed:
First
of all – in face of the time running – we would need a good
mobilisation – talking to indymedia and other alternative media groups
and sympathetic professionals in the major cities on the different
continents.
In my opinion we should aim to
have at least the cities involved where the WSF/ ESF or other fora have
already taken place and try to get Eastern Europe and Arabic countries
to join in, maybe also China.
The local groups then shoud have
the opportunity to ask for technical and financial aid in a central
committee – e.g. a Palestinian group wants to organize a screening in
Ramallah, then the committee could link them up with the Alternative
Information Center in Jerusalem,
or in case a group in Kenia wants
to organize someting in a slum area and needs the equipment, we could
link them up with an NGO that could do a bit of funding or even has
this kind of equiment (a beamer and a screen).
The participating cities can be shown on the same map on the website as the participating groups (doing some kind of action) or on a different map.
